How $12 Can Buy Hacked Social Media and Streaming Accounts on the Dark Web, 2022 Whizcase Study Reveals

LONDON, September 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Hacked entertainment accounts, such as Netflix, Hulu and Disney+, are illegally selling on the Dark Web for less than $15found a Whizcase review from 2022.

The most available accounts are social media, with darknet marketplaces full of hacked social media profiles selling for only $6 per hacked account.

The cheapest hacked accounts were from Reddit, TikTok and Pinterest, ranging from $6 and $9. A hacked Instagram account is $12while the most expensive hacked social profile was LinkedIn, which sold around $45 per account.

The Whizcase study offered a window into the trends and prices of hacked social media and entertainment accounts being sold illegally on the dark web based on data collected from January toSeptember 2022.

The report uncovered a thriving market for pirated entertainment service accounts:

  • LinkedIn account: $45
  • Facebook account: $14
  • Instagram account: $12
  • Discord account: $12
  • Snapchat account: $12
  • TikTok account: $8

Entertainment account prices start from just $6 for a SoundCloud account, Amazon Prime Video ($9)then HBO Max is $10.

Most of them are obtained from social engineering or phishing campaigns after hackers have compromised users’ email addresses used during registration.

Usually, these accounts are tied to their original owners’ payment processing solution, which hackers often compromise.

The original owners are locked into these accounts, unable to unlink their card details from them. The only solution in these situations is to cancel the attached credit or debit card.

A hacked Gmail account is the most expensive item for communication tools and live chat at around $45. WhatsApp, Skype and Telegram accounts can be as small as $18, $6and $8respectively.

Instead of selling their “loot”, many hackers use compromised accounts to run “sophisticated bot farms” for manipulation of social media engagement.

The advantage of this over creating direct bot accounts is that the hacked accounts originally belonged to real people, which means manipulation campaigns will be much harder for social media to detect.

Research shows that buying social media engagement is also extremely cheap. For only $25one could buy 1,000 Twitter retweets from seemingly legitimate accounts.

For only $8, one could buy 1,000 Facebook likes for a page or post. It is often possible to choose the country of origin of the Likes or Retweets for a few extra dollars.

Whizcase Research Compiler Alex Popa said: “Securing social media and entertainment software accounts reduces social disruption, identity theft, and outright theft.”

He added: “The impact of these software hacks and cyberattacks could be used to help spread false information, defraud or steal your money or gaming chips, and ultimately steal your identity.

Once they breach your personal account information, attackers go on a spending spree or commit crimes in your name.”
