Everything you need to know to use a jade roller on your face


Looking for a simple trick to reduce puffiness and lighten skin?

You may have seen jade rollers touted on social media and YouTube as a miracle cure for everything from swollen skin to lymphatic drainage.

There are many reasons why you might consider using a jade roller.

Read on to find out what they are and how to do it, step by step.

Jade rollers are effective in pushing excess fluids and toxins through your lymphatic system, says Dendy engelman, MD, certified dermatologist at the Shafer Clinic in New York.

Since you’re most likely to notice puffiness in the morning after a long night’s sleep, it’s best to use a jade roller in the morning. Here’s how.

Use of a jade roller on the face, neck and eye area

You can use a jade roller on your face, neck, eye area, and cleavage.

Before you begin, do the following:

  1. Store your jade roll in the refrigerator. “The benefit of a jade roller, as opposed to just a massage with the hands, is that the cool temperature of the stone can help alleviate puffiness,” Engelman says.
  2. Cleanse your skin. Follow your usual morning skincare routine. If it is a cleanse, rinse your skin before using the roller.
  3. Apply a serum or moisturizer. Use your regular nourishing product just before your jade roller. “The massaging motion of the roller can help your topical products better absorb into your skin,” Engelman says.

When you’re ready to go, do the following:

  1. Pick the right side. The small side of the roller is ideal for the area around your eyes and the bridge of your nose. Use the wider side on your forehead, cheeks, and jawline.
  2. Roll gently. Avoid pulling on the skin to avoid irritating it. Engelman recommends aiming for 10-20 shots on each section of the face you want to target.
  3. Roll from the center of the face outward. Lymphatic drainage is located on the sides of the face. “Rolling the fluid away from your face and toward the lymph nodes will naturally stimulate the system to drain the fluid,” Engelman notes.
  4. Follow your contours. “For best results and skin health, be gentle and move in the direction of the natural contour of your face,” says Engelman. For the jaw and cheek area, this means rolling up slightly.
  5. Guide fluids through the lymphatic system. Finally, roll around the edges of your face and then onto your neck. Engelman says it helps guide fluid through the lymphatic system.

Don’t worry too much about pulling on the skin. Even regular rolling is not enough to contribute to wrinkles.

“The time spent on each section of the face is so brief, and your rolling motions should be gentle enough that you’re not actually pulling on the skin,” she says.

While there is no evidence that the jade itself makes the tool more efficient, there are some advantages to using a jade roller, including:

  • lymphatic drainage
  • firmer facial skin
  • facial deflation
  • improved circulation
  • better product absorption

“It’s the massaging motion that drains the fluids,” Engelman adds.

Lymphatic drainage

The lymphatic system carries fluids and filters toxins from the body.

“Massaging the face and neck can stimulate the lymph nodes to drain fluid from the face,” says Engelman.

Firmer, puff-free skin

Engelman says there are a few potential culprits behind a slightly swollen or puffy appearance:

  • Lying down for long periods of time causes fluid to build up in the soft tissues of the face. This is why you are most likely to notice puffiness in the morning.
  • Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can contribute to fluid retention and puffiness.
  • Eating processed foods that are high in sodium makes you thirsty. When you drink more fluids, they can build up in certain areas of the body, including the face.
  • Drinking alcohol can cause your body to retain water to counteract the dehydrating effects of alcohol.

Massaging the face and neck pushes fluids and toxins into the lymphatic channels and stimulates the lymph nodes to drain them, says Engelman. This results in a firmer, less puffy appearance.

“The results are temporary. Good nutrition and exercise can help prevent water retention, and therefore puffiness, ”she explains.

Improved circulation

Face rolling stimulates blood circulation, which can make your skin look brighter, firmer and healthier.

Any facial massage, when done correctly, can help improve circulation and reduce puffiness – with or without a jade roller, ”says Engelman.

Better product absorption

Engelman recommends always applying a serum or moisturizer before using a jade roller.

“Rolling or massaging your face after applying the topical product can help the product to be absorbed into your skin,” she says.

Some people claim that jade rollers can stimulate collagen production, but there is no evidence that they have this effect.

“As far as we know, the only really effective ways to improve your collagen are peels, retinoids, and skin treatments,” says Engelman.

Ditto for acne. The cool temperature of any stone rolling tool can help temporarily calm inflamed skin.

“But the rolling jade itself is not known to be a cure. [for acne],” she says.

The bottom line

There is no evidence that jade rollers can improve collagen production or fight acne.

Jade rollers aren’t the only tool on the market. Different styles of tools can have different effects.

Using a roller with spikes

Some people use larger jade rollers with spikes on the lower body. While some claim the tool can reduce cellulite on the hips, the effects are likely temporary.

“It can have the same deflating effect on your body as it does on the face, but rolling is unlikely to improve or get rid of cellulite significantly,” Engelman says.

Use the roller in the same way as a face roller. If you use it on areas of the body below the heart, such as the hips, roll upwards. It is the natural direction of lymphatic drainage.

Using a gua sha tool

A gua sha tool is a scraper-like tool that is often made of jade, quartz, or other stones.

“Its shape and edges allow it to provide a stronger, more targeted massage than a roller,” says Engelman.

You can use a gua sha tool to massage the face, neck and body to stimulate the lymphatic system and circulation. This helps drain retained fluids and deflate your skin, Engelman explains.

You will use it in the same way as a roller.

  1. Apply a serum, oil or moisturizer to cleanse the skin.
  2. Work the gua sha tool on the targeted area in smooth motions, as if you are gently “scratching” the skin, suggests Engelman.
  3. Finish by scraping the edges of your face and neck.

Jade is one of the most popular roller materials. According to Gemological Institute of America (GIA), The Chinese have used jade for thousands of years and relate it to clarity of mind and purity of mind.

Other roller materials

In addition to jade, rose quartz is another common roller material.

According to Gemological Institute of America (GIA), quartz has been used for at least 7,000 years for its supposed magical powers. The Egyptians, for example, believed quartz could prevent aging, while early American cultures believed it could heal emotions.

Engelman notes that there is no evidence to suggest that either of these rocks has any specific advantages over any other hard material.

Engelman recommends the following safety tips for face rollers:

  • Choose the right material. Make sure your roller is not made of a porous material, which can easily trap bacteria. “It can cause acne breakouts or an allergic reaction,” she says.
  • Use light pressure. Your roller should never cause pain or pull your skin. Riding too aggressively can irritate and even damage the skin, especially in sensitive areas, such as under the eyes.
  • Wash your roller with soap and lukewarm water. Clean it after each use. This eliminates bacteria and dirt that could irritate your skin or lead to acne breakouts.
  • Don’t make your skin worse. Face rolling is safe for most skin types when done correctly.

Speak with your dermatologist before using a jade roller if your skin is irritated, damaged, painful to the touch, or if you have a pre-existing skin condition.

The jade rollers gently massage the skin. This helps stimulate the lymph nodes to drain fluids and toxins from the face, temporarily reducing puffiness.

Facial massage also stimulates circulation, making your skin brighter and firmer.

Be sure to choose a roller made from a non-porous material, such as jade, quartz, or amethyst. And clean your roller after each use to avoid aggravating your skin or causing acne.
