0

Deathloop is one of the best games on PS5 to date.

Bethesda

The Playstation 5 had an impressive first year. After a solid launch with games like Demon’s Souls, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Astro’s playroom, 2021 saw an assortment of PS5 games that made it worth owning the console early on. And while some exclusives we were hoping to see this year have been pushed back further into 2022 – like Horizon forbidden to the west – we saw plenty of PS5 games again in 2021 that showed what Sony’s new console can do.

As the console’s first anniversary approaches, we’ve rounded up a selection of PS5best games – so far. This roundup includes first-party games such as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Return and console exclusive third-party games such as the recent Death loop. Be sure to check out this article, as we’ll be updating it with more notable games in the PS5 library.

Death loop

Bethesda

Arkane Studios’ Deathloop injects the thrilling open-ended action-stealth gameplay of the Dishonored series as part of a time loop, delivering the most inventive and deviously clever first-person action game in the world. year. Getting to explore Blackreef Island as the cunning and equally hilarious Colt showcases Deathloop’s skillful handling of comedy and eccentric, ultra-violence.

Most encounters you do will leave you in awe of how far you can push the intricate design of its mechanical world to assassinate key targets and break the infinite loop. But when you add another player who can invade your game as Colt’s former lover turned rival Julianna, Blackreef Isle becomes an impromptu multiplayer arena that sees one player chasing the other. Deathloop quickly carved a place for itself on the list of must-have PS5 games, and it’s also one of the best games of 2021.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Insomniac

The Ratchet & Clank series is synonymous with the PlayStation brand, and even after nearly 20 years of gaming, Rift Apart is one of the best entries in the entire series. Rift Apart leans heavily on the series’ proven action platform formula with a healthy dose of over-the-top weaponry, but the latest game features one of the strongest stories the franchise has ever seen, providing longtime fans and newcomers alike a compelling experience and a fun storyline to follow. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a great centerpiece of what the PS5 can do, and it’s also made us more excited about the future of the series.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade

Square Enix

The 2020 Final Fantasy VII remake almost seemed too good to be true. Revisiting the world of Final Fantasy VII and seeing the classic hero party in a visually stunning new light was a surreal and equally thrilling experience. It managed to surpass its nickname of being just another remake, and it was indeed one of the best role-playing games of the year. However, the catch is that this is only one part of a bigger story, and we have to wait awhile until we even get a preview of the next episode. Still, Intergrade on PS5 has been a great way to retain players so far.

In addition to an impressive visual and gameplay upgrade for FFVII Remake, Intergrade also added a new PS5 exclusive story expansion focused on FFVII’s eccentric ninja, Yuffie, and her journey through Midgar. If you own a PS5 and still haven’t had a chance to check out Final Fantasy VII Remake, check out Intergrade.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut

Sucker Punch

Another revisit of a PS4 game is the director’s cut for Ghost of Tsushima, an open-world samurai action game from the creators of the Infamous series. What makes the PS5 edition a clear upgrade from the original is that in addition to having the Iki Island expansion, which adds over 5 hours of new story content, it also gave the base game a substantial performance upgrade. With enhanced tech buffs adding increased frame rate, faster loading, and native 4K resolution, this enhanced edition makes Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut on PS5 the definitive way to experience the visually stunning and carefully crafted open world. from developer Sucker Punch Productions. Game.

Return

Brand

2021 saw an unusual amount of games unfold as part of a time loop, and the PS5 exclusive Returnal remains one of the weirdest of the year. Combining fast-paced, third-person action gameplay with the unpredictability of a random role-playing game, Returnal takes his protagonist Selene through an alien planet filled with hostile creatures and enigmatic artifacts detailing a cataclysmic event – and it all comes together. somehow connects to it. Its plot looks like a carefully calculated mix of films like Prometheus and Edge of Tomorrow, but Returnal’s story and presentation gives it a flavor of its own. Running and shooting through Returnal’s many ruins with bizarre alien weapons offers some of the most satisfying and exciting shooters of the year, making you loop one more loop across the planet.

Demon souls

From the software

One of the most striking trends of the past decade has been the rise of super difficult Game. This is due in large part to the success of Dark Souls, from FromSoftware, which released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. But Dark Souls itself was a spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, a much-loved game from FromSoftware released. in 2009. .

And now Demon’s Souls has a second life on PlayStation 5, because it’s arguably the best game on the platform. It has a 92 rating on Metacritic and got a 9 out of 10 from GameSpot. He’s been credited with faithfully remaking the 2009 classic, but upgrading it with better movement and modernizing it with graphics that show what the PS5 can do.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

In Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a 2017 Spider-Man expansion, you can wear a backpack in which a little cat wearing a Spider-Man mask appears and attacks your enemies.

I don’t think I need to develop further.

Astro’s playroom

Sony Computer Entertainment

Without a handout, Astro’s Playroom is a glorified tech demo. Out of charity, this is a glorious technological demonstration.

Designed to show what the PlayStation 5’s Dual Sense controller can do, Astro’s Playroom comes free with the PlayStation 5. “Free tech demo” doesn’t scream “must-play”, but Astro’s Playroom has received a lot of praise for being filled with clever tributes to previous PlayStation games and, more importantly, to be fun to play.

Astro’s Game Room makes no secret of the fact that it’s an excuse to show you what a gamepad can do. But it does conjure up a world you’ll want to see and explore, according to GameSpot’s Mike Epstein.

The pathless

Annapurna Interactive

A third-person action game almost primarily about flow and movement, The Pathless is a joy to play with every second that you have the controller in your hand.

It’s available on other platforms including the iPad, but I’d say it’s best played on a current gen console like the PS5, where the visuals and frame rate reflect the smoothness. of game design.

Hitman 3

Interactive IO

Hitman 3 is the first big game of 2021 and it’s a good one too. Closing the rebooted Hitman trilogy, which began with the eponymous 2016 title, Hitman 3 received a 9/10 from CNET’s sister site GameSpot thanks to its excellent level design, improved storyline, and replayability. This last attribute is the key. Hitman might be talking about assassinations, but it’s more of a puzzle game than an action game, and you’ll have to play each level over and over again to see all of the creative ways Agent 47 can do without. mean guys.

The game is available on both PS4 and PS5, among other consoles, but the PS5 version features 4K gameplay, 60fps and enhanced haptic feedback thanks to the DualSense controller.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Ubisoft

It’s far from exclusive to the PlayStation 5, but Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is still arguably the biggest game on console. I mean literally: it’s a huge game. The main quest will take you over 50 hours to beat and there are plenty of other good Viking things to see on the side. The PS5 version makes raids in England smoother, with 4K gameplay at 60fps.
